The Birth of National Campus Sustainability Day

Every year on October 26th, campuses across the nation unite to raise awareness about sustainability and promote eco-conscious practices. This important day aims to encourage students, faculty, and staff to take action towards creating a greener and more sustainable future.

Back in 2002, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) saw the need to emphasize sustainability within campus communities. Thus, National Campus Sustainability Day was born!

The Birth of Campus Sustainability

In 1990, campus sustainability emerged as a concept that aimed to foster a more environmentally conscious approach to operations and curriculum on college and university campuses. The term 'campus sustainability' refers to the practice of integrating sustainable practices and principles into all aspects of campus life, including energy and water conservation, waste reduction, sustainable transportation, and sustainable building design.

1991

Foundations for a Sustainable Future

In 1991, the United Nations established the first major international environmental treaty, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development. This declaration emphasized the need for sustainable development, highlighting the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic concerns. The principles outlined in the Rio Declaration influenced the development of campus sustainability initiatives, providing a foundation for integrating sustainability into higher education institutions.

1998

The Talloires Declaration

In 1998, a group of university administrators from around the world gathered at Talloires, France, to discuss the role of higher education in promoting sustainability. The result of this meeting was the Talloires Declaration, which called for universities to become leaders in sustainability and environmental literacy. Many colleges and universities embraced this declaration, committing to promoting sustainability through education, research, operations, and outreach.

2005

Growing Momentum: The American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment

In 2005, a coalition of university presidents launched the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). This initiative aimed to address climate change by committing signatory institutions to achieving carbon neutrality or net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. The ACUPCC spurred the development of campus sustainability plans, energy conservation projects, and curriculum enhancements focused on climate change and sustainability.

2015

The Rise of Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 goals aimed at addressing global challenges related to poverty, inequality, climate change, and more. Higher education institutions embraced the SDGs, recognizing their role in advancing sustainability through research, education, and partnerships. Campus sustainability efforts increasingly aligned with the SDGs, helping institutions contribute to the global sustainability agenda.

Expanding Scope and Holistic Approaches

Today, campus sustainability continues to evolve and expand its scope.
