History behind the term 'Yoyo'

500 BCE

Ancient Origins

The history of the yoyo can be traced back to ancient Greece, where a primitive form of the toy was known as a 'diskos'. These early yoyos were made of stone, metal, or wood, and were used primarily as a weapon or hunting tool. The diskos evolved into a toy in various cultures throughout history.

16th century

Arrival in the Philippines

The yoyo as we know it today was introduced to the Western world by European explorers who encountered the toy in the Philippines. The Filipino version of the yoyo, called the 'lul-lul', was made of two interconnected discs with a string attached. It was mainly used as a hunting weapon and a toy for Filipino children.

1928

Patent for the Modern Yoyo

In 1928, a Filipino-American named Pedro Flores obtained a patent for an improved design of the yoyo. Flores started a company called the 'Yo-yo Manufacturing Company' in Santa Barbara, California, and began mass-producing yoyos. This marked the birth of the modern yoyo industry.

1960s

Surge in Popularity

During the 1960s, the yoyo experienced a major surge in popularity, becoming a global phenomenon. This was largely due to a yo-yo competition held by Donald F. Duncan Sr., the founder of the Duncan Yo-Yo Company. The competition showcased incredible yo-yo tricks and attracted the attention of both children and adults.

1990s

Yoyo Renaissance

In the 1990s, the yoyo saw a resurgence in popularity thanks to a new generation of yoyo players who pushed the boundaries of what could be done with the toy. This period, known as the 'yoyo renaissance', saw the emergence of professional yoyo competitions and the development of advanced yoyo designs.

Present Day

Yoyo in Pop Culture

The yoyo continues to be a beloved toy and a symbol of skill and craftsmanship. It has been featured in various forms of media, including movies, TV shows, and video games. The World Yo-Yo Contest, held annually, showcases the talents of yoyo players from all over the world, further cementing the yoyo's place in pop culture.

Did you know?

Did you know that the largest yo-yo in the world stands at a whopping 11 feet tall and weighs over 4,000 pounds? It was created in 2015 by a group of yo-yo enthusiasts in the United States. Talk about taking yo-yo skills to new heights!
