Unfortunately, Barbara was eventually captured, and her own father mercilessly beheaded her. However, according to the legend, as Dioscorus carried out the execution, a terrible storm struck, and he was struck by lightning. As a result of his actions, Saint Barbara became the patron saint of artillerymen, miners, and those who work with explosives. She is also entreated for protection from thunderstorms, fire, and sudden death.
