History behind the term 'Popsicle'

1905

The Unintentional Invention

In 1905, a young boy named Frank Epperson left a glass of soda with a stirring stick on his porch overnight. The temperature dropped significantly that night, and when Frank discovered the glass the next morning, he noticed that the liquid had frozen around the stick, creating a delightful frozen treat on a stick.

1924

From 'Eppsicles' to 'Popsicles'

Nearly two decades later, in 1924, Frank Epperson decided to share his frozen treat with the world. He initially named it 'Eppsicles' after his own last name. However, over time, the name 'Eppsicles' was changed to 'Popsicles' based on the sound children made when asking for them – 'Pop's sicles!'. The new name resonated so well with kids that it eventually stuck.

1928

Popsicles Go Commercial

In 1928, Frank Epperson patented his invention and introduced the first official Popsicle, under the newly coined name, to the market. The original Popsicles came in just two flavors: cherry and lemon. The treat gained immense popularity, especially during the hot summer months, captivating the taste buds of both children and adults alike.

1989

The Guinness World Record Popsicle

In 1989, the city of Iowa thought of a unique way to celebrate its 100th anniversary. They decided to create a giant Popsicle to break the Guinness World Record. This colossal Popsicle measured over 21 feet in length and weighed a whopping 6,600 pounds. It contained 5,500 gallons of orange frozen delight and could have served over 35,000 people. Talk about a refreshing way to commemorate a milestone!

Today

Popsicles Around the World

Today, Popsicles are beloved frozen treats enjoyed by people of all ages in various countries around the world. They come in countless flavors, from classics like strawberry and orange to more innovative options like watermelon mint and chocolate-covered banana. Popsicles have become an iconic symbol of carefree summer days, providing a refreshing burst of flavor on a stick.
