History behind the term 'Patriotes'

1834

Beginning of Société des Fils de la Liberté

In 1834, a secret society called the Société des Fils de la Liberté (Society of the Sons of Liberty) was formed in Lower Canada (now Quebec). Their aim was to advocate for political reforms, particularly to fight against the British colonial government's arbitrary rule and to promote French Canadian nationalism.

1837

The 92 Resolutions

After growing discontent with British rule, the Parti patriote (the Patriotic Party) led by Louis-Joseph Papineau drafted a set of 92 Resolutions outlining demands for political and economic reforms. These resolutions called for responsible government, increased power for the elected assembly, and protection of French language and culture. The term 'patriotes' emerged to refer to the supporters of this movement.

1837

The Lower Canada Rebellion

In 1837, the growing tensions between the patriotes and the British colonial government led to armed conflict in Lower Canada. The patriotes, led by figures like Louis-Joseph Papineau and Wolfred Nelson, rebelled against British authority in an attempt to establish an independent government. The rebellion, however, was quickly suppressed by the British forces, leading to the exile or imprisonment of many patriotes.

1838

The Aftermath and Legacy

Following the defeat of the rebellion, the term 'patriotes' took on a more specific meaning, referring to those who had actively participated in or supported the rebellion. Many patriotes faced harsh consequences, including imprisonment, deportation, or execution. Despite their defeat, the patriotes' struggle for political and linguistic rights remained influential in the nationalist movements of Quebec, leaving a lasting legacy in the history of Quebec and Canadian nationalism.
