History behind the term 'Minnesota'

Exploration by Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut

In 1679, French explorer Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, ventured into what is now Minnesota. He named the region 'Minisota,' derived from a Native American Dakota Sioux word meaning 'sky-tinted water' or 'smoky water.' This marked the first known encounter of Europeans with the area.

Louisiana Purchase and U.S. Expansion

In 1803, the United States acquired the massive territory known as the Louisiana Purchase, which included Minnesota. This purchase doubled the size of the young nation and extended its influence westward, including the future state of Minnesota.
