When is Dog Hot Dog Day?

It's national dog hot dog day on the 27th August.

The Internet History of National Dog Hot Dog Day

It all started on August 27, 2015, when the internet erupted with excitement over the combination of two beloved icons: dogs and hot dogs. People from all around the world took to social media to share adorable pictures of their furry friends enjoying a tasty treat.

Since then, National Dog Hot Dog Day has become an annual celebration that brings together dog owners, hot dog vendors, and canine enthusiasts of all kinds. The day is filled with fun activities, like dog parades, hot dog eating contests (for humans, of course), and dog-friendly picnics.

But what makes a hot dog doggone special? It's not just the bun and the toppings, although those are important too. It's the way that dogs and hot dogs have become inseparable companions throughout history.

In ancient times, dogs were used for hunting, guarding, and even companionship. And what better way to reward a loyal four-legged companion than with a delicious, juicy hot dog? As the years went by, hot dogs became a staple at backyard barbecues and family gatherings, often shared with the furry members of the family.

So, on this special day, we honor the timeless bond between dogs and hot dogs. Whether you're a dog owner treating your pup to a special meal or a hot dog lover sharing a bite with your furry friend, National Dog Hot Dog Day is a time to celebrate the joy that dogs and hot dogs bring to our lives.

History behind the term 'Dog Hot Dog'

1867

The Birth of the Wienerwurst

In 1867, a German immigrant named Charles Feltman arrived in the United States and opened a small food stand on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. Feltman, who had previously worked as a baker, started serving a German sausage called wienerwurst. These sausages were made using a combination of beef and pork and were served in a long roll, similar to the hot dogs we know today.

1871

The Invention of the 'Hot Dog'

In 1871, a newspaper cartoonist named Thomas Aloysius Dorgan, also known as Tad Dorgan, started working for the New York Evening Journal. One day, while drawing cartoons to illustrate a baseball game at the Polo Grounds, he couldn't come up with a suitable name for the sausages being sold by vendors. Frustrated, he called them 'hot dogs' in one of his cartoons, combining the German wienerwurst with the popular notion that sausages were made from dog meat. The term 'hot dog' quickly caught on and became synonymous with the wienerwurst sausage.

1904

Hot Dogs at the St. Louis World's Fair

The St. Louis World's Fair, also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, took place in 1904 and showcased various inventions and cultural displays. One of the most popular food items at the fair was the 'hot dog.' Vendors served thousands of hot dogs to attendees, helping solidify the term's popularity and association with the sausage in a bun.

1916

The First Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Stand

In 1916, a Polish immigrant named Nathan Handwerker opened Nathan's Famous, a hot dog stand on Coney Island, just a few blocks away from Charles Feltman's original food stand. Nathan's Famous quickly became renowned for its delicious hot dogs and remains an iconic New York City institution to this day.

1939

The Introduction of the 'Dog' Descriptor

As the popularity of hot dogs continued to grow, the term 'dog' became commonly used as a playful and affectionate descriptor for hot dogs. This term added an element of fun and familiarity to the already beloved food, further solidifying its place in American culinary culture.

1940s

'Hot Dog' in Pop Culture

During the 1940s, the term 'dog' became deeply intertwined with hot dog culture. It appeared in popular songs, such as the hit collaboration between Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby titled 'Now You Has Jazz,' where they sing about various food items including 'hot dogs.' This reinforced the term's association with the food and ensured its lasting presence in American pop culture.

1970

The 'Hot Dog' Becomes a National Day

In 1970, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, an organization dedicated to promoting hot dogs and sausages, designated July 14th as National Hot Dog Day. Over time, this celebration expanded to become National Hot Dog Month, celebrated throughout July. This annual event showcases the beloved hot dog and its cultural significance in the United States.

Did you know?

Did you know that the world record for the most hot dogs eaten in 10 minutes is held by Joey Chestnut, who devoured a whopping 75 hot dogs and buns? That's a lot of wiener wisdom right there!
