History behind the term 'Doughtnut'

1809

The Origin of the Term

The term 'doughtnut' first appeared in Washington Irving's satirical book 'A History of New York' as a reference to fried balls of sweetened dough, which were often shaped like nuts (or dough-nuts).

1847

The Spelling Transformation

Hanson Gregory, an American sailor, claimed to have invented the ring-shaped doughnut we know today by shoving a fried cake onto the ship's steering wheel. At the time, they were spelled as 'doughnuts', but Gregory suggested dropping the 'ugh' to make the word easier to write and pronounce.

1920

The Rise of Doughnut Shops

During the 1920s, doughnut shops began to emerge across America. Adin E. McDonough established the first franchise-based doughnut chain, 'Dunkin' Donuts', in 1950. This marked the beginning of the commercialization and mass production of doughnuts, making them easily accessible to the public.

1938

National Doughnut Day

The Salvation Army originated National Doughnut Day in 1938 to honor the 'lassies' who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The day is celebrated annually on the first Friday of June, highlighting the cultural significance and historical connection between doughnuts and charity.

1991

The Global Doughnut Craze

Krispy Kreme, a popular doughnut retailer, expanded internationally in the late 1990s, igniting a global doughnut craze. The distinctive aroma and delectable taste of Krispy Kreme doughnuts contributed to their worldwide popularity and established doughnuts as a beloved treat around the globe.
